The Feast of St. Henry, Bishop of Finland (19 January) celebrates the Patron Saint of Finland – a 12th century Bishop and martyr, associated with numerous miracles. His story is foundational folklore for the Finnish identity, though in modern times some side with Lalli, Henry’s murderer, viewing him as a nationalist hero resisting a foreign invader. Still others, due in large part to the miraculous aspects of the story and that it was exclusively an oral tradition for a century, doubt that the account happened at all.
The post includes a feast day recipe for Karelian Pies (Karjalanpiirakka), a traditional Finnish treat.
