What Are Heavy?
by Christina Rossetti
What are heavy? Sea-sand and sorrow;
What are brief? Today and tomorrow;
What are frail? Spring blossoms and youth;
What are deep? The ocean and truth.
This short poem by Christina Rossetti is four lines without a consistent meter. The rhyme scheme is AABB.
This piece asks four questions, and provides short but profound answers to each. The question and answer structure of the poem encourages the Reader to reflect on the four topics. The exercise leads the Reader into a contemplation of the meaning of words and the meaning of life.
