The next book for me is Black Beauty by Anna Sewell, narrated by Nathaniel Parker. The audiobook is 5 hours and 21 minutes long.
The full name of the novel is Black Beauty: His Grooms and Companions, the Autobiography of a Horse, though it is known today as just “Black Beauty.” The book by English author Anna Sewell was first published in 1877, near the end of Sewell’s life. The author lived long enough see that the book was an immediate success, though she could not have known the endurance of that success. Black Beauty has sold over 50 million copies and remains popular with young readers nearly a century and a half after its initial release.
PUBLISHER’S SUMMARY
via audible
With 50 million copies sold, Black Beauty is one of the best-selling books of all time. While forthrightly teaching animal welfare, it also teaches how to treat people with kindness, sympathy, and respect. The story is narrated in the first “person” as an autobiographical memoir told by a horse named Black Beauty—including his carefree days as a colt on an English farm, his later difficult life pulling cabs in London, and his happy retirement in the country.
And with this story, my novel reading leaves the adventurous world of ocean-going vessels and ventures bravely into the new territory of horse autobiographies. Giddyap.
