Speak softly But with Stick in hand

Let ugly words hang in the air,
To cast a dark light on their speaker.
Withheld retort might not feel fair,
But standing in their sky is weaker.

Yet ugly deeds must be confronted,
A shepherd should protect his sheep,
Should he refuse they will be hunted,
The price of neglect will be steep.

Speak softly but with stick in hand,
Though you should never hope to use it,
But if a wolf bites, take a stand,
‘Cause more will come if you refuse it.
