Sarah was finishing up the dishes, after her kids had gone to bed, when she heard a tapping on the outside of her kitchen window. Though the curtain was pulled back, the light from the room created so much reflection on the glass that she could not see out without making an obvious effort to look, and she was afraid of how someone on the other side of the glass might react if she turned to face him directly.

With a growing sense of dread, she called out as calmly as she could manage to her husband, and when he entered the room he asked what she needed and if she had yet noticed the blackbird perched on the windowsill outside.
