“My team has started calling our next find the elephant in the room of human history,” he tells his hushed audience, “because strictly speaking, it should not exist.”

The archaeologist presses a button and changes the image to his next slide, revealing then a skeleton recovered from the ocean floor, fifteen miles south of São Jorge’s coastline at its southernmost point.

“We have carbon dated the fossils to be twelve thousand years old, but as you might guess, we have no explanation, short of an incomprehensible human intervention, as to how an African elephant came to be buried on the ocean floor, in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean.”
