“Hi, this is Jimmy and I’m sorry I missed you, so please leave a message after the beep, and I’ll give you a call back as soon as I can.” Staring at the bottle of Jack Daniels on his coffee table, Mark hangs up before his sponsor’s beep and thinks to himself that this day is going to be his toughest “one day at a time” so far.
To distract himself from his new neighbor’s unwittingly disastrous welcome gift, and to buy time in a battle he knows he will eventually lose to that bottle, Mark decides to mitigate his damages by removing from his phone the numbers of some women he might call while drunk who are as equally dangerous and life-ruining as the Jack Daniels he lacks the will power to pour out.
