Fred steps outside and discovers to his surprise that he misses the odious smell of the dogfood plant that used to operate a mile upwind from his home. He had always hated that place, its smell, and how much it hurt his property value, so when it closed a couple months ago he considered it a personal victory.

Today, though, as he impassively watches the new family – existing – across the street, he thinks that he would gladly trade the fresh air for the return of the old neighbors who left town after the plant closure.
