Latin:

In absentia lucis, Tenebrae vincunt.

English:

In the absence of light, darkness prevails.

This popular Latin phrase is very reminiscent (for me, at least) of a passage from the Latin (Vulgate) Bible.

John 1:5 et lux in tenebris lucet et tenebrae eam non conprehenderunt (which translate to “and the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overtake it.”) Perhaps a Roman Christian noted the similarities between the two at some point.
